Simply Red are a group I have loved for years. I must have been to see Mick Hucknall and Simply Red over 15 times. Last weekend he was in Scarborough at the Open Air Theatre. So my sisters and I decided to go and see him again.
Scarborough is a beautiful seaside town on the North Yorkshire coast of England. It's one of those classic British seaside resorts that has a charm all of its own — the sea air, the fish and chips, the amusement arcades, and of course the stunning open-air theatre perched on the clifftops.
We booked a lovely little hotel right in the town centre and made a proper weekend of it. Friday night we arrived, had a gorgeous meal at a local restaurant, and just enjoyed being together as sisters. There's something so special about time with your siblings — the laughter, the shared memories, the ability to just be yourself completely.
Saturday was the big day. We spent the afternoon exploring the town, walking along the seafront, and treating ourselves to ice cream despite the typically unpredictable British weather. Then as evening approached, we made our way up to the Open Air Theatre.
The setting was absolutely magical. The theatre is carved into the hillside overlooking the sea, and as the sun began to set, the atmosphere was electric. Thousands of people all there for the same reason — to hear that unmistakable voice.
And Mick Hucknall did not disappoint. From the opening notes of the first song, the crowd was on their feet. All the classics were there — Stars, Holding Back the Years, If You Don't Know Me By Now. Every single song brought back memories and emotions.
It was one of those perfect evenings that you know you'll remember forever. Great music, wonderful company, a beautiful setting. What more could you ask for?
If you ever get the chance to see Simply Red live, grab it with both hands. And if you've never visited Scarborough, put it on your list. It's a gem of the English coast.
