Which Is More Important: Attitude Or MLM Skills?
In network marketing a lot of emphasis is placed on having a positive attitude. This is actually true with direct sales in general.
I came across an article recently where they were quoting statistics from the Direct Selling Association on what percentage of importance would you assign to each of these four valuable skills? (Read more here)
1. Product Knowledge
2. Selling Skills
3. People Skills
4. Positive Mental Attitude
I find the results fascinating. Which do you think is the most and least important?
Positive mental attitude got 50% out of 100% in this survey. Product knowledge got the least at 10%.
Why Did Positive Mental Attitude Get 50%?
I know from experience that it’s about equally divided between people who think they can build a successful network marketing business and those who think they can’t.
Beyond a shadow of doubt the people who think they can, have a positive mental attitude.
Chances are people who have already been successful in their life are able to continue with that attitude when they start their own network marketing business.
Those who have been fairly negative in the past are probably going to bring that attitude with them.
However, this is what I find interesting. You are going to face challenges like you may have never faced before as you go through the process of selling your product, prospecting for new distributors, and training people to be successful on a long-term basis.
It is important to have some skills, especially Internet marketing skills. Unless you plan on building your business 100% off-line, you’re going to use the Internet as a prospecting tool.
All of the positive mental attitude in the world is not going to get visitors to your website. However, having a positive mental attitude is going to help you stick with it until you develop your own successful prospecting and sponsoring skills.
There’s not a lot of selling that goes into network marketing when done correctly. It’s more about exposure, building credibility, developing relationships, and following up on a consistent basis.
All of these certainly do take skills. With an emphasis on social media marketing, skills will come into play, but a good portion of that’s going to be done on the Internet and not with direct contact.
If you maintain a positive attitude, by developing the necessary Internet marketing in social marketing skills, you will enjoy your business more, and end up where you want to be!

Having a positive mental attitude is so important in business!
HI Vitaliy, thanks for commenting. I totally agree with you. I would go as far as to say having a positive mental attitude is important in life as well.
I would say all 4 of those would be pretty significant. You don’t have to be great at all of them but you will need a bit of skills in each area. You can be the most positive person in the world but if you don’t know how to talk and connect with people what good is that? They all go hand in hand. Great post Lynda!
HI Dereco, I am inclined to agree with you. Interestingly the results of the survey in the article I mentioned, a positive mental attitude came out on top with 50% agreeing it was important. I think all four are important and having the right attitude will help.
Attitude is more important, I completely agree. “However, having a positive mental attitude is going to help you stick with it until you develop your own successful prospecting and sponsoring skills”, don’t think I could have said it truer myself.

If you don’t project a positive attitude people will see through you that you are just trying to “sell” them. People don’t want to be sold to. Belief in your product or service, a genuine desire to help someone better their life will show people you care. It should never be about us it should always be about who you can help.
