How To Deal With Stress
Stress can affect our lives in more ways than one. Learning how to deal with it, prevent it even, can lead to us feeling much happier and positive.
Just about all of us are exposed to more stress than we really want. It can be challenges at work, in business, relationships, children, juggling family life with work etc.
So isn’t it a good idea for us to find ways to deal with stress, or even prevent it?
What Is Stress?
In certain situations our body goes into a “state of stress”. Our blood flow does to other muscles and our brain function isn’t working as normal. This is when you might hear the term “I can’t think straight”. When any of us are in this mode, it can affect people around us, including our family, friends and people we work with. We snap at people, being irritated and feeling overwhelmed with everything.
It can negatively affect our health. For instance, it increases the sugar and blood pressure levels and makes us feel tired.
Its important to say that everyone deals with stress and experiences things in different ways. However, there is no doubt that being stressed at work for instance, causes many lost days at work.
How To Deal With Stress
I want to share some of the things that I have found helpful:
Look After Your Health
Without good health then what else is there? Look after yourself by eating healthily with well balanced meals. Reduce your alcohol levels and if you smoke, stop. I know that stopping smoking can cause anxiety, I used to be a smoker myself. However, we know its not good for us and there are many aids to help now.
I take daily vitamin supplements from one of my favourite companies. They keep my immune system strong and prevent me catching colds and flu. Its been massive for me this past year due to having an auto immune disease.
Get A Good Nights Sleep
Did you know that we spend a third of our lives asleep? Its a really important part of staying well. We can’t be in good health if we don’t sleep well. And if we are deprived of sleep too often and we don’t look after ourselves properly then being stressed out will happen more often.
Drink More Water
This might sound obvious but we really do need to drink more water. I have an alarm on my phone to remind me to stay hydrated and drink more. Its been a necessity for me because I just wasn’t drinking enough. Dehydration of our body can cause us to feel unwell, and in extreme cases can lead to dizziness and confusion.
Get Moving
This isn’t me suggesting you enrol in the nearest gym and go for daily work outs. If you do thats great. However, going out for a brisk walk or practicing some energising exercises at the side of your work place can really help. I use some exercises with clients that get you moving and breathing better.
Have A Positive Mindset
You have probably heard this many times but it is really necessary and important to grasp this.
YOU can decide that you are not going to allow being stressed to affect your life anymore. What affects one person doesn’t affect another in the same way. This could be an indicator that some stresses we experience are in our own heads.
When you get stressed again, ask yourself why. Will the world stop if you feel there isn’t enough time in the day to get all your jobs done? Does it matter if the bathroom doesn’t get cleaned this week?
I saw a quote once that said if something is stressing you out, will it matter in 5 years time?
Work on your mind by making time for yourself, even if only for 10 minutes a day. Read positive books, mix with positive people. Tell yourself, enough is enough ” I am no longer going to allow myself to be as stressed as this again”. You CAN be in control of how you cope with things.
Manage Your Time Better
Do you feel like you’re always rushing around, playing catch up? Do you tell yourself there aren’t enough hours in the day? First of slow down. Its not the end of the world if you don’t achieve everything in your day.
Learn to manage your time better.
When you get up in the morning, forget Ipads, phones and television, plan your day over your breakfast. Schedule your time in your diary or on a list. It will help you feel in control, calm and know your priorities for the day and what isn’t a priority.
Don’t allow other peoples agendas take over yours.
Set alarms on your phone to remind you to do things, even for calming down or doing a bit of exercise. Breathing exercises are good during the day for calming you down.
Learn To Say No More Often
Something inside us wants to please everyone and yet saying yes to everything can leave us feeling worse. Decide today to say no to something, especially if its going to be detrimental to your well being. Looking after yourself, your time and your health is worth it.
A Quote From Brendon Burchard About Stress.
“People who fight basic stress advice are usually the ones who are the most stressed because:
- They want to make their stress right,
- want to justify it.
- and want to have a reason for all this turmoil and drama and stress in their life.
They’re looking for a reason and you know what? There is no reason except that reason in which you give yourself.
There is no reason any of us has to be wandering around crazy stressed out.”
Summary

There may be other techniques out there you will find to help you. It all begins with YOU. You can decide how you will deal with stress in the future. And don’t use excuses to justify why you are stressed. Instead see how much better you will feel if you learn to cope in a more positive way.
