Starting Over In Life
The idea of a worker who may have been in the work force for 40 years suddenly starting over at 50+ is a trend that is exploding as many baby boomers hit that age bracket.
There have always been people around trying something new but the trend has hit such a new high in the baby boomer retirement picture.
You have to wonder what it is about baby boomers that make them want to start over with new careers late in life.
Why Start Over?
Part of it has to do with the way business has worked in the last few decades.
In our parents working years, for instance, the norm was to work for the same place and stay there for 40-50 years, get the old watch and retire with a handsome retirement package.
That just doesn’t work any more.
For one thing, retirement plans supported by employers have become a thing of the past.
Savings for retirement have plummeted, as the financial demands of life are what most people struggle to keep up with.
So the idea of working into what used to be called the retirement years is now a given, particularly for financial reasons.
Employees staying with the same company for their entire adult lives is simply no longer a reality for all but a few in the modern work force.
Many baby boomers have worked in dozens of places in their adult lives so their retirement packages, if they exist at all, are small.
Part of this can be attributed to the entrepreneurial spirit of baby boomers. (I can relate to this)
There has been a shift in the way business works as well.
Companies don’t like the idea of keeping employees that long.
Additionally, many companies have gone out of business, so that by the time most boomers hit their 50s and 60s, the idea of keeping one single career is pretty hard to do.
This is not the only reason why baby boomers are starting over late in life.
Other Reasons For Starting Over
We never did accept that the rules of life or aging applied to us.
We are ambitious, adventurous and willing to strike new paths with much less fear than previous generations.
As boomers have faced some of the challenges of the economy and the modern business world, they have responded aggressively by starting businesses or changing their careers entirely late in life.
Most are just as willing to stick with that new career until they are as successful as they were when they were 30.
Many people find a line of work, learn they can pay the bills and raise their kids early in life but they do not follow their dream career at that time.
So when the time in life comes that the kids have left, the house paid off (hopefully) and the adventure of living has settled down, many baby boomers see that as the chance to finally throw off that boring old career and go after their dream career once and for all by starting over
It is inspirational to see someone at that stage of life setting the standard for not settling for anything less than realizing their dream by launching a new career doing what they always wanted to do all along.
Who can fault boomers from wanting to find success in a career that fulfils their passions?
So, hats off to the late in life boomers who go for gold in their later years.
They will be an inspiration for many coming behind them to be as bold about their lives as well.

Great stuff, Lynda. “Hats off to the late in life boomers who go for gold in their later years” is right! Inspiration for everyone, younger and older alike. Thanks!
Thanks Adam. We can start over at any time of our lives and I admire anyone who does. Thanks for your comments, they are appreciated
Your blog is very inspiring and exact. I can relate 100%. I raised my two adult children while working and gave up on my dreams and goals. They are now adults and on their own, so I figured let me focus on my career and move up the corporate latter. However, the Lord had different plans for me. I got married and had a baby. She changed my life completely. She was the hope and inspiration I needed to take the courage to resign from my job and pursue my dreams of having my own business so I can be there for my family. I love this blog post. I’m sure you will motivate and inspire others as well. Thank you Lynda. You have made a difference.
HI Julia, thank you so much for your comments. I am thrilled you have pursued your dreams of having your own business. That is inspiration itself for others to do the same. Thanks again
