If You’re Short Of Money Read This.
Being short of money is no joke.
It doesn’t seem like 5 minutes ago that I was really skint (broke). My cupboards weren’t stocked with food and when I went to a supermarket I was terrified I wouldn’t have enough to pay at the check out.
Being seriously envious of people with full baskets was depressing to say the least.
I admit, I was jealous and envious of people with money. Sayings like ‘money goes to money” used to run through my mind. Or stuff like, “money can’t buy you happiness”.
Well let me tell you, poverty doesn’t bring happiness either.
My kids look back at the second hand clothes I made them wear and laugh about it. My son used to play football on the local field in his brown flared trousers and wellies because I couldn’t afford boots or for him to damage his one pair of shoes.
Or the time my family came to visit and I couldn’t make them a cup of tea because I had none in the house.
Constantly worrying about money is something you can’t stop doing when you haven’t got any.
I’ve seen people get angry when they meet prospects who say they can’t afford what they’re offering. They think many of these people are making excuses. Maybe some of them are but when I said I didn’t have money I didn’t.
I couldn’t have sold anything to raise any, I had nothing that was worth selling. I didn’t have a credit card. Back then only “money” people had those.
This is not a sob story. This is me saying that if you are ever in this position it doesn’t have to stay that way.
When My Money Situation Changed
My final straw came when I had a solitary pound in my purse.
One single solitary pound to feed my kids. It bought me a tin of baked beans and a loaf of bread for their dinner.
It was a night when I was mega pissed off and depressed with my bloody life. The thought of living like that forever was the worst feeling.
There was only me could change it. I was a single parent with no one else to rely on.
So I started job hunting to begin with. Tough because I had to also worry about child care when they weren’t at school. Thankfully I did have a friend who offered to help.
Working with people was of huge interest to me and I had always had an interest in Social Work. A job came up at a local children’s home. They were advertising for a “HouseParent” for children with severe physical and mental disability. Experience was asked for but I didn’t let that put me off. I was wise to do that because unbelievably I got the job.
This was the beginning part of changing my life and ending money worries.
What Happened Next?
I got experience in residential social work at the children’s home. This fuelled my ambition to go further and I applied and was accepted at University to train as a Social Worker.
After qualifying, I specialised in child protection and fostering and in the 1990’s was offered the opportunity to begin a Fostering Agency. Taking great risks I left my well earned job and began the business from my kitchen table.
Rolling the camera forward, the agency was a huge success and I began earning more money. When I sold my shares in the company 10 years later I had the kind of income I dreamed of when I was in poverty with my kids.
I now own a home in England and Portugal. My husband and I travel the world and I was able to help my kids on the housing ladder.
I am beyond grateful for my life.
What about YOU?
The whole point of this post is to give YOU hope.
Hope that YOU CAN change your life. Obviously you have to be determined and prepared to give it all you’ve got but anything is possible if you really want it enough.
Opportunities are more available now because of the internet and many “ordinary” people like me are doing well. There are things like network marketing, online marketing, direct selling of products etc.
Last year, I decided I wanted to be a full time coach. Without the right attitude and mindset changing things can be tough. I am passionate about personal AND professional development and spend my time now helping others to grow within themselves.
Investing in yourself is never a waste of money or time. It can change your whole life. Having a coach certainly changed mine as well as the education I received as well.
