Want To Pay Attention To What Really Matters? Here’s How.
Do you pay attention to what you should be during your every day life? It might sound a silly question but many of us are guilty of paying attention to the stupidest things.
Before going any further, stop for a minute or two and ask yourself what you are giving vital attention to right now. Is it Social Media? What about watching TV?
Is there any part of your life not working as it should be? Your health, relationships, business, family/friends/ emotional well being, favourite pastimes- are all the cogs in your “engine” operating properly or well?
Give yourself a score from 1-10 and see how each of the areas I mentioned are doing. Then ask what you need to pay attention to more.
Its Easier Said Than Done To Pay Attention
There are a ton of things that can lead us to pay attention to one thing, more than another. I know when I was building a business I was so focused that I ignored everything else around me.
We are often told that we have to make sacrifices in order to be successful. Thats what I told myself when I missed yet another event at my children’s school. I justified my absences by telling my family if they wanted the good things in life then doing without me was necessary.
If I had had the coaching I now receive I would do it very differently. There is a difference between working hard and working smart.
My example was a big one. Lets look at smaller ones. For instance, how many things “steal” your attention encouraging you to be negative, judgemental and angry even?
One of my coaches, Brendon Burchard, encourages us to put the emotion back into our life. In other words, instead of being distant and too busy with the people that matter to us, start giving a damn again.
You can be self determined, in command and control of how you are in life. Allowing your business or other areas of our life dictate to us is easy. It gives us excuses to ignore the things we say we haven’t time for. However, we can be much more clever than this.
You can come up with consistency and momentum to improve your life in all areas, including your business.
The purpose is to improve ALL the things in your life that matter.
HOW To Pay Attention To What Really Matters.
Brendon taught me that two things control all of what we do….. DESIRE and COMMAND.
For example:
DESIRE – In your relationships, what do you want them to be?
In your business, how much is your desire, do you have a vision, values, standards etc?
COMMAND – You have to be in command of yourself. Be in control and self determined.
Ask how much you feel in charge of all the areas in your life and be in COMMAND of your responses.
Relationships
Lets go back to having more emotion in our life. Are you “present” when you are with your partner? You would be amazed how that one thing can change your relationship for the better. Don’t forget the desire bit though. It has to be what you WANT it to be.
For years, I was distracted by my phone, computer or thoughts when my husband, for instance, was telling me something. I often found myself answering him on auto pilot.
How many of you reading this are guilty of that?
What about business?
How “present” are you with members of your team, colleagues, employees? When having a conversation with anyone, do your put your phone down and give them full eye contact, concentrating only on them?
If its an online meeting, have you turned off notifications and social media?
I hope you’re getting the gist of what I am attempting to say here.
The bottom line is, you can be a victim of your “busy life” or a victor.
What About Your Health?
Our health matters more than anything. How can we do anything if our health is poor? What attention are you paying to your health and what are you doing to stay healthy?
Your actions in this area AND the others are where you can improve your original scores.
Sometimes, your health concerns are out of your control. You didn’t cause it and they appeared.
It happened to me when I was diagnosed with an auto immune disease. It happened to my Mother when she was diagnosed with lung cancer.
If you have a serious illness, then of course, you don’t need me to tell you to pay attention.
In our every day life though, we can always give our health attention.
Working so hard that we don’t get enough sleep, drink enough water, eat healthy, get exercise is something we can definitely control.
Your overall well being deserves it as does your loved ones.
To summarise
Bring back emotion into your life.
Work out what your desires are and act upon them
Be in command and control of yourself. – Allow yourself to be self determined
Be a Victor and not a Victim.
Keep a check on what you are doing each day and what you are paying attention to. Look at ALL areas of your life and change your behaviour to improve those areas.
Your Health and relationships matter as much as your business/career. Work on not sacrificing one for the other. Create actions to pay attention to them all.
Stay ahead by keeping up with your personal growth and development and most of all be happy.
