When Oprah Feels Defeated This Is What She Says.
Feeling defeated is an emotion we all go through from time to time. After reading an article on Oprah Winfrey’s site on this very subject, I wanted to share some of her advice.
Here is my interpretation of her advice.
Oprah begins by saying (and I agree) its ok to wallow in it for a few minutes. In fact I would encourage you to have a good wallow and feel sorry for yourself. As long as it doesn’t go on all day, just a few minutes. After that, its time to dust yourself off and get out of the mood.
How do you do that?
You know when one thing goes wrong, it feels everything else has as well. Everything gets you down and you are beat or you feel beat. The next time you feel this way, I hope you follow what I’m going to share with you. So save this post for the next time you feel defeated.
Feeling Defeated? Here’s What To Do.
Make a List
Make list of whats wrong. Its a different thing to what you FEEL is wrong.
“Having a finite list of problems is much better than having an illogical feeling that everything is wrong.” – Ed Catmull
When you list it down I bet you find not everything is wrong at all. Its your feelings taking over and if you’ve read any of my blogs you know you can overcome those.
Celebrate Who You Are and What You Have
Ok so your feelings of being defeated have made you think you’re hopeless at everything. You think you can’t do anything right and you want to give up.
Oprah, in her article asks you to imagine what a six year old would say about your current life. Oprah suggests this six year old would think you were pretty amazing.
So, think about the good things in your life, what you have achieved. You know deep down you’ve achieved a lot. Celebrate every win in your life, large and small. See yourself through that little six year olds eyes.
Challenge Your Inner Self and Bounce Back.
You failed at something. So what? Every single one of us messes up at some point or another. You don’t have to beat yourself up constantly over it.
Admit to your mistakes, own up to it and tell everyone. We love to see the vulnerable side of people. It makes us feel a whole lot better about our mistakes. No longer do you feel the only one.
Learn from it, move on and put it all down to experience. No one is perfect, its an impossible thing to be.
Remember the Bad Times and How You Survived
How many times has stuff gone wrong in your life and you came through it. For me, I went through two divorces and came through feeling much happier. Oprah says not enough of us celebrate that. We think of the happy things we have done instead, which is ok. However, its the challenges in our life that taught us lessons and allowed us to change our life.
Do Something Different
In Oprah’s article she suggests “crochet your own sherlock”. I thought to myself, what the heck does that mean.
You might be feeling or asking, when defeated, whats the point or purpose of all this. I know, I have been there.
Distract yourself with something different. The crochet bit is about creating something or doing something different. Knit a jumper, listen to music, cook a meal from that favourite cookbook of yours. Anything that lets you achieve something and distracts you from those feelings of defeat.
Look at some Beauty In The World
Tour google and look at some wonderful photographs to cheer you up. Look at the beaches, mountains, family photographs, anything that uplifts you.
Oprah suggests looking at Nasa’s photographs or reading the Discovery blog.
Summing Up
Feeling better? I hope you now realise that if Oprah writes about feeling defeated then its a subject that means something to all of us. We will often have those days when everything goes wrong and we feel totally down about it all.
You are not alone. Don’t be looking on Social Media, thinking everyone has the perfect life where nothing goes wrong. Its not true. Some will only tell you or show you what they want you to see.
Next time you feel defeated, remember this list and check out Oprah’s article. She says things in her own unique way.
