Baby Boomers: We Reject Words Like Old or Ageing
According to StarTribune and an article written by Jackie Crosby:-
“Don’t call us old: Baby boomers reject traditional terms for ageing……….As baby boomers reject traditional terms for ageing, businesses and marketers scramble to find the right words.”
As a Baby Boomer myself, I can totally relate to this statement. I feel certain that many other Baby Boomers feel the same way and so when we are in the world of marketing and business, one of the things we don’t want to do is alienate people by using terms which they reject.
I once heard a news article and the newsreader was saying an “elderly” woman of 60 had been attacked in the street. The attack was shocking but the thing that affected me the most was the use of the term “elderly” for someone as young as 60. It may not be an issue for some, although I know many other Baby Boomers where it is an issue. Some, in fact, would be quite offended if they were deemed “old” “senior”, “elderly”, “past it” ………… I could go on.
“Any company that wants to woo this senior set can’t risk alienating them with words that carry negative connotations,” (Kathryn Roberts, CEO of Acumen)
My video today gives my own personal perspective of how I view this subject and why its important when you are marketing to baby boomers
My strongest message today? Use the right language or be careful of the words you use when marketing to baby boomers.

i like what I’ve read here and I see that Ray Higdons wife is in this also, so I’m wondering can I market my home business here ? Do want to presume anything.
Thank You, Laura Phillips
Hi Laura, thanks for commenting and I am pleased you like what you have read. I not quite sure what you mean about marketing your home business though. I know Ray and Jessica, through being part of the same team and Ray Higdon, is coaching and mentoring me for the next six months. I recently spent time with him in Florida for a workshop he did. I wondered what you meant by “here”, as this is my own personal website/blog. However, if I can help you in any way then please let me know. Please keep in touch.
Lynda
great post, Lynda and truthfully, it wasn’t something I had thought about before! I love reading or hearing things that make me think! Well done!
Hi Emilie, thank you for stopping by, I really appreciate it. I’m glad it got you thinking . If my blog post has done that then I did my job. Thanks again. Lynda
