Leader or Manager?
Leader or manager of people is two very different things.
To use my own experience when I began a business in the 90’s, I went through many different stages and had to quickly learn the difference.
According to a Forbes article I read, the Top Ten Qualities of a Leader are as follows.
- Having a great idea
- Honesty
- Ability to Delegate
- Communication
- Confidence
- Commitment
- Positive Attitude
- Creativity
- Intuition
- Ability to Inspire

I want to bring your attention to being a leader in your home business. This could be your network marketing team, affiliate programme etc.
Your role is to lead rather than manage.
The people you recruit to your team are like you. Self employed entrepreneurs who want the freedom to do what they want in their life.
Therefore the way to act as a leader is by example and not by telling them what to do.
Empower people to take control and do things for themselves.
Being a leader can be tough, however, in the longer term, you would be doing someone a dis-service by boosting your own ego and having them rely on you for everything.
In today’s video, I share my views on leadership, my experience of being a manager AND a leader, what the difference is and how to be a leader yourself.

What do you prefer? Being managed or being encouraged to become a leader yourself? To be a success in any business, becoming a leader and helping others to the same will be something you need to aspire too.

You are so right on with this post….. We all should be striving to be great leaders and creators of great leaders… Love John Maxwell’s books on leadership… great post … thanks for sharing Lynda Kenny…you rock…
Thanks a lot Ron. I made many mistakes during my learning curve and quickly got the difference between being a manager and a leader. That knowledge is easily transferred to our home business and the way we behave with our teams.
Awesome post, Lynda! This is such a great topic and I think I like “honesty” as the big characteristic of leadership that stands out to me. Hard to ask those to share in a vision with you if you aren’t honest with your own vision and honest with the feedback and advice you’re giving to your people. Leaders create other leaders…not followers! Love it!
Great that you loved the post Adam. I love the honesty bit too. It can become easy to have a load of followers but I see our job as empowering people to become leaders themselves. Thanks so much for commenting.
I think becoming a leader is a self development journey especially since most people come from an employee or a boss background so they are used to giving orders instead of leading by example.
You are right Jenni. It is a development journey and like everything we learn as we go and put what we learn into practice. That is exactly what has happened with me. I hope my post helps others on their journey. Thanks so much for commenting.
So powerful!
I read a great book by Robin Sharma who talked about leaders who have no title.
It really resonated with me.
thank you Lynda.
Thanks so much Justin. I love books on leadership. I haven’t read the one you mention so I must take a look at that
