The Fountain Of Youth And Ageing

September 16, 2015 by Lynda Kenny 8 Comments

The Fountain Of Youth And AgeingThe Fountain Of Youth And Ageing

If there ever were a generation who would put every resource known to man against the challenge of defeating ageing, it would be my generation.

Of course the deeply rooted desire in all of us to stop or turn back the ageing process is as old as time itself.

We have evidence of that in literature. From The Fountain to Youth to Peter Pan, there have been many efforts to just stubbornly say “I wont grow up” as though stamping our feet can actually keep us from growing older.

My generation seems to have always had a love affair with youth. It is probably deeply rooted in our explosive teen and twenties years in which we became the center of the universe as our youth culture dominated the sixties and seventies.

That kind of thing can convince you that you are the generation that would never grow old.

Of course, we are getting older and the interest in staying vibrant and active has resulted in the explosive growth of the health and wellness and travel industry.

If we cant stop ageing from happening, we can at least not LOOK old or act like it either.

From a medical view, of course, there has never been an anti ageing medicine or pill.pills

Medical science has not found any magic potion that could cause aging to stop or to reverse its effects.

Even if ageing could be stopped at some level you have to wonder if that would be practical in light of ageing that affects the whole of what a person is.

We know that we don’t just age in body, we age in attitudes, in maturity, inn our ambition and how we view our goals in life.

This has as much to do with the cycles of life from youth to parenthood to middle age and then to retirement as it does with physical changes in our bodies.

For many, the question might be, If science could make it possible for you to never age or die, would you even want that?

There is an intuitive knowledge in our hearts that we have a season to live on this earth and then its time to pass the torch to the next generation.

We Are Defined By Our Place In Life

Everything works on that cycle. You are defined by your place in life.

So if you are in your forties, being a parent or a spouse is considered the appropriate place to be.

So too, at 70 or 80, we are expected to be a wise old grandma and granddad.

Our behavior in society, what we value and what we look for from others is supposed to be driven by our age in life.

If ageing were somehow defeated entirely, our entire cycle of life would have to be completely re-evaluated.

If you knew you would live 200 years rather than 80 or 90 years, how would you plan your family, your career and your finances?

The Fountain Of Youth And AgeingThankfully, perhaps, aging remains a constant.

The good news is while we fight ageing with a passion, we are also capable of growing into our senior years with a lot to give back to society.

So just as we have been had a huge impact on society through every other decade, when we accept that we are going to be part of that ageing process, we will be a great generation of grandmas and grandpas as well.

Such a great post today, Lynda. It’s a profound question to ponder when asked if I’d want to live forever. So much good stuff to think about and put in perspective on how we age and how we fit into it all. Thanks!

Boy… I wish someone would have shared this with me when I was young… I was indestructible…. my time in the military, martial arts, extreme sports and everything else.. I thought I had to do it all before I was old not understanding that I needed to take of myself along the way and enjoy the journey at every stage… now in my 60’s my health is good but I do have some aches and pains from my active youth… great post Lynda…. thanks for sharing..

Ron, I think many of us wish we knew the things we know now when we were younger. I am exactly the same. Thankfully my health is good at the moment unless I try to run somewhere , lol. Thanks a lot for sharing your comments Ron.

Lynda, thank you for the in-depth article you shared today. I had my mom read it as well because she can identify and relate. My favorite section that you wrote was that you just don’t age in body but in attitude, maturity, ambition and how we view our goals in life. So very TRUE!

    Thank you so much.

Thanks very much for commenting Elvia. I’m glad your mom could relate to it. Staying young in our mind and attitude is key I think.
